I want to keep them in a formicarium when i have more than 10 workers. It is not very good when you give them a big area and nest so early.
I hope i get more workers before the year ends. Maybe i have luck ... i can only wait.
The queen and the first worker life in a 20mm/18mm test tube, but the queen is so big that she have problems to go in an other position. Look this two pictures:
I have new pictures from my queen and she have the first worker but she eat one pupa!
I think the pupa was die because i had many water in the test tube. now is better and i hope the colony will grow up fast :)
This is not consobrinus, this queen is mutch bigger! The color is different, not many, i think they are in the same group with C. consobrinus and C. nigriceps.
Look for good pictures of C. consobrinus at this link:
Thanks for your answers/questions and good wishes!
I hope i can give good answers of all your questions.
I have search for a good ground for my Formicariums, when you design this "hill" with Y-tong you have a very massive Formicarium. So i found this Полистирол (http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9F%D0%BE%D0%BB%D0%B8%D1%81%D1%82%D0%B8%D1%80%D0%BE%D0%BB). It is very light and you can work with it very well. I make this "hill" and close all open things with Гипс, i design it with Гипс. My last work was to mixed Суглинок and sand and water and to paint the mountain with it.
The entry you see (Tube), there i can conect a Nest or an Formicarium more.
The Formicarium is 50x20x50, i think it is enough for a long time. When the colony need a new Nest i will make a nest and connect an bigger arena on this formicarium. I hope the nest i have now will be ok 6 month.
In the last month my colony grow up, i make a new nest and a new arena for my colony.
It runs very good last weeks, before they had a problem with the humidity in the nest, so i make a nest where i can make two rooms fresh with water.
The best is that i have make it so that the sand can not be humidity, look at my pictures:
Here is a video where you can see how the ants go from a "TicTac" Box to the new nest:
I give many food, flys, maggots, cockroaches, caterpillars and worms. I give sugar water and fresh water too! The fresh water is very important, you forget it to often and the colony go down!
Here more pictures from the colony, the pictures are older:
Take a look to the new pictures from last weekend:
You can see that the colony grow up, more larvae more pupas and more worker. I hope it will run so good next month, too.
And now some new videos:
And my last video ist from the new nest, the video is from last weekend too!
I hope you will have a good time with my pictures and my videos!
I have many new pictures of my colony, they are many many brood. Eggs, Larvae and pupas in different size. There are very big Larvae and in few days will born a big Major. I have now a new major, he is bigger than the others, maybe 15mm. But look same at my pictures now:
I have made new pictures of my colony. They was born a new worker few days ago. Now there are one queen, two workers, three pupa´s, two larvae and five/seven eggs. I give cockroaches and sugar water, sometimes with honey. Here now the pictures:
I think, send a queen is easy and small colonys with not more than 20 workers is easy too. But bigger you get the problem i have wrote!
You must make a box or a tuber where the ants can not shake in the box, i mean that they have a good stand in the tube and maybe some chembers in the box. The best is queen and not more than 15-20 workers. Cataglyphis queen alone is not good, you have some trouble with it to grow up a colony!
The best by Cataglyphis queens is that you dig some small pupas from the same species and put it to the queen. That is the best method, other is to many risk for this rar Cataglyphis queens!!!
I have found a big population near Donezk! I hope i can go this year to Crimea, but we dont know if we can go there.
I say it here when i know when we go to ukraine :)
Hi, yes many Cataglyphis species (maybe all?) make not a flight or only the queens flight a bit. They most run on the ground and search for males and queens. we call it in german "Ehe lauf / Hochzeitstanz". The Cataglyphis aenescens do it so, i want to come to ukraine when they swarm, but not this year and i hope i can make a video from this!
I think they have to many place in the box there was sending to me. The box wil shake underway and the ants will fall down of his own. They attack himself because normal effect when you shake ants in e box you can see it. And Cataglyphis are very agressive ants and when one attack with acid, all want do the same!
Yes Kentuki, i only need it for make pictures. My Friend have a colony but the only make males and workers, no queens!
So they go out from nest in the morning want search for a queen, but no chance, they die after few days! But interesting that they want make mating flight in the morning. and the only jump a bit and run, no flight!!!
I will add new pictures so you can see that the wings are to small for a good flight!
They die by sending, they come not alive to me all was dead! It was maybe 100-120 workers and one queen!
The die because the are make an acid attack of his own. I open the box and i get an ant acid feel in my nose, very havy!
I cray since 3 month for this ants, they was wunderful, nice and very interesting for me!
I have not found an english or russian link for this method. Here a german link, i think you can look at the pictures and understand what itis "retro position"
Sorry i can not understand all, but i want say that the ants are very beautiful! I have a small colony too, but Messor spec. are not my best ants. I have not good running colonys with Messor sp., i dont know why! All say that Messor is very easy....
Greetings from Germany!
Mathias
P.S The Genus must wrote big "Messor" and the species are wrote small "arenarius" and when you know it is a subspecies of Messor arenarius you wrote this small too! I think you have the Messor from Israel, so it is "Messor arenarius ratus". This only by the why!
I get the queen from a friend he get it from an other friend they was in Australia.
So i have ask for this nice queen, here you can look how look like bigger workers, i hope i get same in future:
Thanks @ all!
I make all nests with "Ячеистый бетон" and make it with "Сугли́нок" look like in the nature! I mix cугли́нок with sand and water and paints the stone with it. It looks like a nest in the ground, in the nature.
The temperature is high, on day the sand have 35-45°C the nest in top have 30°C and in the ground 23-25°C. The ants dont lift up the gaster when they run. they dont need it, because the silver reflect the sunshine. So they can run in nature by over 50-60°C outside the nest, when other insects can only die in the sun! In the 5-6 weeks i hold them by 15-20°C!
Cataglyphis aenescens i had hold 2 1/2 years, need lower temperatures for longer time. I had hold them from October till march by 3-8°C in a cold place on my balcony! I get after 2 years queens and males, but you get it only when you make a good "winter"!!!
Thanks for your messages! They will make me happy and i think i will give more blogs next time about my other ant species.
But now my ne pictures:
First, my "Formicarium" for my Camponotus fellah, but on day they are not so active than in the night or evening!
Look here:
And here a picture from the nest:
You see they have now many place in the new nest so i think it is enough for this year!
They have bring the pupa in the top of the stone and the larvae lay down in the ground!

So my last pictures from the ants, they love the new nest:

Hi!
Nice video and i can show your this foto of my queen, you see the eggs on the gaster too!
I don´t know why they do it, i see it sometimes in this colony and i know a friend see the same by his colony!
But iam wundering, why your Cataglyphis do not sleep? We have winter, they need Спячка. Is it in russia/ukraina normal that no ant colony do it???
best wishes!
